The Barritus was the war-cry of the Germanic barbarian tribes the Roman legions encountered on the edges of the frontier in the 4th century AD. The literal word means the "trumpeting," like that of an elephant. We don't know exactly what it sounded like, but the ancient historian, Tacitus, tells us that it was used with effectiveness by the tribes to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy right before a battle.
